New Old Time Chautauqua was pleased as punch to be part of the

Great Peninsula Future Festival

There are so many things in our world that need attention - sustainability, thinking local, healthy food, climate change - and we think the important business of reeducating ourselves needs to be fun, too. Mixed in with all the interesting and innovative ideas at the GPFF, we offered whimsy and humor through music, juggling, magic, aerial performance, acrobatics and comedy.

The New Old Time Chautauqua partnered with local non profit organizations who are doing great things, such as community gardens that donate their bounty to the local food bank, animal rescue, environmental cleanup, supporting at-risk youth and families, community radio, educational programs for kids, and food co-ops.

We were right to look forward to the Great Peninsula Future Festival. It was great fun...

Aqua Chautauqua sails the Salish Sea

— Port Townsend, July 1, 2008

On Saturday, July 19, the New Old Time Chautauqua will present a day of community fun at Fort Worden's Littlefield Green and McCurdy Pavilion.

From 1-4 PM, Littlefield Green will come alive with an Educational Circus - a puppet show, circus skills funshops and nautical workshops. You can learn to juggle, hula-hoop, perform acrobatics, play samba rhythms, clown, or mystify friends with a magic trick. Other activities include mask-making, trash fashions made from recycled materials, quilting ("blankees" - for local at-risk infants), and a song swap (bring your musical instruments and songs). Maritime workshops include knot-tying, sea chanteys, nautical storytelling, a Salish Sea historical lecture and how to use GPS.

From 4:30-6 PM the community is invited to an old-fashioned Community Potluck - a great opportunity to lay out a blanket, share food and picnic with your neighbors, meet and chat with Chautauqua performers and teachers in a relaxed atmosphere, and enjoy the talents of local musicians.

In the McCurdy Pavilion at 7 PM, The Flying Karamazov Brothers will host a family-friendly, all the bell and whistles, madcap evening of music, juggling, magic, acrobatics, clowning, aerial acts and comedy. The show will feature legendary folksinger Faith Petric, Hacki (winner of the European "Golden Nose" award for clowning), lyrical aerialists Duo Madrona, the Fighting Instruments of Karma Marching Chamber Band/Orchestra plus many more of the multi-generational troupe.

The evening show will benefit the Youth Education Programs of the Northwest Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation and the New Old Time Chautauqua.

***

This day of events will be the first in a series of Aqua Chautauqua Tour stops. The journey will begin in Port Townsend and end in Port Gamble, by way of Lopez, Waldron and Lummi Islands, Bellingham, and Langley. Non profit partners will include youth programs, Tilth and sustainability groups.

The voyage is a unique Jefferson County partnership between Chautauqua, Wooden Boat Foundation, and NW Maritime Center, Puget Sound Explorer youth, local boats, captains and crew. Chautauqua has been touring since 1981, but this is the first time the journey will be on boats. "This is a great tour - Chautauquans are excited about being on the water and the Boat Folks are excited about running away with the circus!" says Joannie Murayama, one of the organizers of Aqua Chautauqua.

This tour's plans began when Chautauqua was invited to be a part of the Great Peninsula Future Festival, a sustainability fair in Port Gamble. Paul Magid, one of the founders of both Chautauqua and the Flying Karamazov Brothers, suggested that Chautauqua do the whole tour by boat. Being an avid sailor, Paul has long dreamed of putting Chautauqua on the water.

Since community-building, education and the well-being of children are important issues to Chautauqua, a partnership with the Puget Sound Explorers seemed like a great fit. Puget Sound Explorers, a youth educational program of the Northwest Maritime Center & Wooden Boat Foundation, partners with Port Townsend and Chimacum Schools.

The Wooden Boat Foundation's Wayne Chimenti had been working on a boat voyage for the summer, and the Aqua Chautauqua idea came at a perfect time. It seemed like a unique experience of sailing, performing and living in a nomadic multi-generational community (6 to 93 years old). Ten Puget Sound Explorers, of middle and high school age, will sail two boats, the Wooden Boat Foundation's Dorjun and Chimenti's Fellowship. As part of Chautauqua's circus skill and educational workshops, the Puget Sound Explorers will teach nautical workshops - knot-tying, sea chanteys and maritime stories.

Chautauqua has a personal interest in the Puget Sound Explorer program. Several Chautauquans are alumni, including the Nanda acrobaticalists Misha Fradin, Tomoki and Kiyota Sage. They learned maritime skills such as map and compass reading, knot-tying, rowing, sailing, and singing sea chanteys. They also learned about the importance of teamwork, common sense, leadership and responding quickly to change - valuable lessons for a performance ensemble whose signature characteristics are precision, instinct and innovation.

Chautauquans Misha Fradin and Evan Neville credit the Puget Sound Explorers, ICE and Pi school programs and, specifically, teacher Marci van Cleve for "pushing them hard, with caring support". It was Marci's support that "got them through high school".

Chautauqua is honored to support educational programs such as Puget Sound Explorers.
